Un clásico: Mercado Público de Porto Alegre/ A classic: Porto Alegre Public Market

¡Hola Amigos de Arquitetitis!, en esta tercera entrega voy a escribir sobre un icono arquitectónico y patrimonio histórico cultural de la ciudad de Porto Alegre, su Mercado Público, inaugurada en 1869 para abastecer a la ciudad en proceso de crecimiento causada principalmente por la fuerte migración europea (principalmente italianos y alemanes).

Fue proyectada originalmente en estilo neoclásico por el Ing. Frederico Heydtmann en 1861 y durante las décadas posteriores a su inauguración ha pasado por diversas transformaciones, la más importante de todas fue durante la restauración y reconstrucción entre los años 1990 y 1997, año en que fueron re-inauguradas su nuevas instalaciones, ya que en el año 1979 fue demolida parcialmente por la institución  “Patrimonio Histórico de Porto Alegre” por causa de un incendio acaecido ese mismo año.

El proyecto de restauración de 1990 estuvo a cargo de los Arq. Doris Oliveira, Arq. Evaldo Schumaher, Arq. Octacílio Rosa Ribeiro, Arq. Teófilo Meditsch y la Arq. Vera Maria Becker los cuales se hicieron merecedores al “Premio de la 3º Bienal de Arquitectura” de 1997 en la categoría Patrimonio Histórico.

Gracias a esta intervención, el Mercado gano una estructura metálica central la cual permite un mayor sentido de amplitud y mejoró notablemente  la calidad espacial del proyecto original ya que prácticamente no existía circulación horizontal, permitiendo un mejor acceso a espacios cuadrangulares donde los restaurantes ubicados en el segundo nivel pueden colocar sus mesas para gusto de sus comensales que mientras disfrutan de la gastronomía brasileña,  admiran este espacio lleno de colores y tradición.

La fachada del Mercado Público de Porto Alegre mantiene su espíritu neoclásico casi impoluto por 143 años, donde el amarillo colonial se entre mezcla con los  restaurantes  y sus mesas en madera de teka  invadiendo la Plaza XV de Noviembre, aquí se respira el aire de una capital porteña para conforto del visitante, pero observamos su verdadero carácter ecléctico cuando andamos entre las “bancas” que son los puestos de ventas, todos llenos de productos multicolores, multicolor como el mismo Brasil  y  esta gran estructura metálica se fusiona y integra (sin degradar) con el espacio central del Mercado.

Esta intervención arquitectónica, para los más conservadores esta fuera de contexto en un edificio considerado histórico y tradicional y que se debió mantener el proyecto original del siglo XIX y para los más liberales una intervención adecuada ya que se integra perfectamente los espacios interiores con los exteriores y le da un aire de modernidad, sea como fuese, es imposible no hablar con cierto cariño de este símbolo de una ciudad con tanta historia como Porto Alegre y es un espacio al cual siempre me da gusto visitar.

Hello friends Arquitetitis!, In this third installment I will write about an architectural icon and historic cultural heritage of the city of Porto Alegre, the Public Market, which opened in 1869 to supply the city growth process mainly caused by the strong European migration (mainly Italian and German).

It was originally designed in neoclassical style by Eng. Frederico Heydtmann in 1861 and during the decades after its inauguration has gone through several changes, the most important of all was during the restoration and reconstruction between 1990 and 1997, which were re-opened its new facilities, as in 1979 was partially demolished by the institution "Heritage of Porto Alegre" because of a fire that occurred that year.

The 1990 restoration project was led by the architect Doris Oliveira, architect Evaldo Schumacher, Architect Octacílio Rosa Ribeiro, architect Theophilus Meditsch and architect  Vera Maria Becker which became deserving the "Prize of the 3rd Biennial Architecture "1997 in the Heritage category.

Thanks to this intervention, the market gained a metallic core which allows a greater sense of space and spatial quality improved markedly original project because there was virtually no horizontal circulation, allowing better access to open runs where the restaurants located in the second level can place their tables for diners who like their while enjoying Brazilian cuisine, admire this space full of color and tradition.

The facade of Porto Alegre Public Market neoclassical spirit remains untainted by almost 143 years, where the colonial yellow between  restaurants and teak tables invading Square XV of November, one can breathe the air of this coastal capital for visitor comfort, but his real eclectic look when we walk among the "seats" which are sales positions, all filled with multicolored products, multicolored as Brazil itself and this large metal structure merges and integrates (no degradation) with the central space of the market.

This architectural intervention, for the most conservative is out of context in a historic building that is traditional and should keep the original draft of the nineteenth century and the most liberal considered an appropriate intervention that integrates seamlessly with the interiors and exteriors gives an air of modernity, is that as it is impossible not to talk to certain fondness for this symbol of a city with as much history as Porto Alegre and a space which is always a pleasure to visit.
